Art critic and museum curator, Jean Alboize (1851-1904) became director of the magazine L'artiste (whose shares he bought from Arsène Houssaye) in 1881 and directed the magazine for more than twenty years.

In October 1892, he created with Léonce Bénédite and Henri Patrice Dillon a quarterly publication, L'Album des peintres-lithographes, in connection with the Société des artistes lithographes français.
