"Your charming kindness towards me will not be faltering."

Upon returning from his trip to Touraine with Camille Claudel, Rodin apologized to Marguerite Waldeck-Rousseau for having missed her invitations.

“Dear Madame Waldeck-Rousseau, before leaving on my trip, I apologized for being unable to attend an invitation you were kind enough to send me; upon my return, I found a card asking if I had received an invitation for July 14th. I see it, and I am demoralized that I was unable to respond to that one while I was away. I nevertheless have faith, and your charming kindness towards me will not be falter again. In any case, you know how respectfully devoted I am to you and to Monsieur Waldeck-Rousseau. Rodin.”

Marie Durvis (1854-1936), daughter-in-law of Jean-Martin Charcot, married Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau in December 1888.

From the 1880s onwards, Rodin maintained close ties with Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau, a prominent figure in republican political life and close to Parisian artistic circles. In particular, Waldeck-Rousseau intervened in 1884 on behalf of Rodin's Saint John the Baptist, supporting its placement in the Luxembourg Museum.
