"My dear fellow, I'm very glad to hear that Tovaritch is a triumph, but then I'd really like to go. Could I have two tickets, and two more for the Athénée? – Anything is possible. I imagine you're busy with engagements and rehearsals. In eight days we'll have lunch together if you have the time. With warmest regards, Destouches, 98 rue Lepic."

Tovaritch is a four-act play written and directed by Jacques Deval (1890-1972) in 1933. Tovaritch was adapted into a film in 1935, also directed by Deval. Louis-Ferdinand Céline appeared in the film as an extra. This was Céline's only film appearance before World War II.

In 1933, Céline became an essential writer and achieved significant critical success following the publication of his Journey to the End of the Night in 1932.
