"For eight days, dear Mr. Emile, you have been missing from the Place des Barricades [Hugolian address in Brussels]. People are talking about you, but talking to you is better. Your patient, moreover, is very well. I will probably leave today although the weather is rather hideous, but work is calling me back. Will you be kind enough to give this to your friend Mr. Le Teinturier? Todo tuyo. V. I believe it would be important for your young authority to advise Charles [his son] against Vichy water."

Émile Allix (1836-1911), republican activist and opponent of Emperor Napoleon III, personal physician to Victor Hugo and his family, became a close and intimate friend of the great man.
