An extraordinary photographic print depicting the great man embracing his grandchildren Georges and Jeanne sitting on his lap, and thus celebrating The Art of Being a Grandfather .

The print is enhanced, on the mount, by a moving autograph inscription signed by the author:

I fondly remember all the lovely things you have done for my dear grandchildren, and I thank you most sincerely.

Note: A similar proof bearing the printed inscription in the lower margin: "The Art of Being a Grandfather" in reference to the eponymous collection of poems published in 1877 is kept in the collections of Victor Hugo's house of Hauteville House in Guernsey (inventory 2283).
