"Dear Miss, It is indeed a very good idea to make a book for schoolchildren, but I believe you will have to be content with summarizing what has already been published about the General, arranging it to suit your own ideas.

It so happens that my two eldest children (who are quite gifted writers) have the idea of doing something together after the war about their father. And since their memories only go back about 16-18 years, I jot down for them, as they come to mind, all the facts etc. that I myself knew, or that were told to me in my in-laws' family.

Finally, I know that after the war I will find the necessary photographs to illustrate everything. Please forgive my discretion; mothers only think of their children! And I want their "work" to be good! Please accept, dear Mademoiselle, the expression of my distinguished sentiments. Y. de Gaulle.
