“Sir, I do not share your theories but I approve even less of those that you attribute to me, and when you say that I unfortunately had readers who did not understand me, allow me to count you among them. There is no common ground or discussion between us since, on the one hand, I am not with you and, on the other hand, I am a stranger to the moral system that you are attacking. I therefore cannot respond to you other than by recusing myself from this debate where I cannot plead either cause.
