Max JACOB (1876.1944)

Autograph letter signed to Francis Dumont.

A page in-4°. February 5, 1943. St Benoît sur Loire.

“Very friendly colleague, I am filling out your form as best I can. It is very difficult to know what formed you – and what you prefer – and it is very difficult to cite the names of living poets at the expense of such authors who are not cited. As for my works, there are more than forty numbers ; I cite 20. Refer to the book that Hubert Fabureau wrote about me and that I have no more than I have my works. All this is so indifferent to me!!! My publisher was Gallimard. THANKS ! »

Note that in 1943 the poet experienced difficult times and was banned from publishing. If we think of his near end, the last words of his letter relating to his literary activity are all the more moving: All this is so indifferent to me! ".
