“Dear Mr Brës, I am very sorry. I made a strong commitment before your kind invitation and without remembering it I accepted yours so kindly presented. I have no way to free myself. I therefore ask you once again a real favor to excuse me if I cannot attend your Youth banquet.

I would have been there with two friends that I particularly like, Rodin and Mirbeau. I also admire them like you and it was a joy for me to find myself near them among your friends. It is painful for me to give it up and yet I cannot do otherwise. At the next youth banquet, I will make it my pleasure to be with you and participate in your banquet.

I will send you a note from my friend Constantin Meunier in a few days. Please don't be too harsh on me. I am strong [?] in any case and that puts me, as you see, in situations that are painful for me. Please tell all your friends my regrets. Youth is generous – it can – it has enthusiasm for the present and prepares the strength for the future. I greet her with joy in you and your friends. Believe me, I beg you, your devoted friend, with all my regrets for not being able to be near you on Saturday. With all my heart. Eugene Carriere. »
