Autograph letter signed

“Besides the chamber of peers, the works for L'Advocat and the law of love, I don't know what to become. »

Chateaubriand, then Minister of the Interior, was overwhelmed by his various activities and particularly by the bill which opposed him to the Minister of Finance Joseph de Villèle and which led to his departure from the government in June 1824.

“I was doubly sorry sir for your errand, first because of your health and then because I was unable to benefit from your kindness. I myself would go to thank you and hear your news if I were not immersed in the work that this shameful law has done to me. Besides the Chamber of Peers, the works for L'Advocat [his publisher] and the law of love, I don't know what to become. – I read your excellent little letter this morning. What memories! but all this will pass. A thousand eager compliments. Complete dedication. FRCh. »
