François-René de CHATEAUBRIAND (1768.1848)

Autograph letter signed, probably to Count Raymond de Sèze.

Two pages in-4°. Paris. June 20, 1824.

“It is very certain that I do not regret the power…”

Beautiful letter from Chateaubriand defending himself from any feeling of superiority due to his ministerial functions and thanking his correspondent for his zealous assistance to the Marie-Thérèse institution founded in 1819 by his wife Céleste de Chateaubriand.

“You judge me, Sir, both too well and too badly. It is very certain that I do not regret power, but it is also certain that it is not through the feeling of superiority that I do not recognize myself. Keep me, Sir, a part of your memories and your prayers. The Marie-Thérèse infirmary [the institution created by Céleste de Chateaubriand] cannot forget what it owes to your talents and your zeal. Please accept, Sir, my further thanks and the assurance of my most distinguished consideration. Chateaubriand. »
