A superb work, bearing witness to Vasarely's little-known period (1951-1963): " the black and white period ". These binary compositions of black shapes on white backgrounds and/or white shapes on black backgrounds constitute the basis of his research, the precursors of his Alphabet of Plastic Units.
In 1957, Vasarely wrote about his research on black and white: “Doesn’t optics, even if it is an illusion, belong to kinetic art? Negatives – positives, slides, photograms, hallucinatory plays of black and white. From this stems my discovery: the same composition resolved in black and white automatically gives me a second composition resolved in black and white. The two works are qualitatively equal, both identical and diametrically opposed: mirror images. I have deduced, philosophically speaking, that the signs black and white, the inescapable antinomy of ideas from the past such as day and night, angel and devil, good and evil, are in reality complementarities, fertile androgynous ideas .”
