A rare and magnificent outdoor photograph of Victor Hugo with family and friends in his garden at Hauteville House during the summer of 1878.
Albumen print mounted under a passe-partout in a period gilt frame, embellished with a long autograph inscription signed by the writer:
"Please accept, Madam, with your customary kindness, my earnest regards and respects. Victor Hugo."
In this image, from left to right, we recognize: Julie Chenay, his sister-in-law (née Foucher), Madame Aline Ménard-Dorian (the future mother-in-law of Georges Hugo), her daughter Pauline Ménard-Dorian (future wife of Georges Hugo), Edouard Lockroy (second husband of Alice Hugo), Alice Lockroy née Lehaene (widow of Charles Hugo), Georges and Jeanne Hugo, children of Charles Hugo and Alice, Victor Hugo, Juliette Drouet and Richard Lesclide.
