Mann is negotiating the terms of the contract for the translation of his books into French.
“Dear Sir, I hesitate to return the signed contract you kindly sent me because there is still a part that worries and concerns me. I am sure I am ready to discuss the terms of publication of my books, the format, the number of strips, the number of volumes, as well as the order and publication date (…) However, it does not seem acceptable, as stipulated in clause #1, for me to comment on books that have not yet been published for six years (…) I would also like to adhere to the basic assumption that I must bear the translation costs (…) In practice, however, I am hesitant to negotiate with the translators their share and would prefer that they do so themselves, at least for the time being. (…) I would be grateful if you could share your impressions of Mr. Delage’s French translations.”
