"To believe in heaven, to believe in gods – Even when everything seems hateful – When our hearts are set ablaze."

Serge Gainsbourg corrected and approved the lyrics to one of his masterpieces, " Fuir le bonheur de peur qu'il ne se sauve" (Fleeing Happiness for Fear It May Escape), composed in 1983 for Jane Birkin and her album *Baby Alone in Babylone*. The lyrics were published in the anthology * Mon propre rôle* (My Own Role) published by Denoël.

Fleeing from happiness for fear that it might escape

May the azure sky not turn mauve

Think about it or move on to something else

It would be better

Fleeing from happiness for fear that it might escape

To think that there is over the rainbow

Higher and higher, the sky above

Radiant

To believe in heaven, to believe in gods

Even when everything seems hateful to us

That our heart is set ablaze and burned

Fleeing from happiness for fear that it might escape

Like a little mouse in a corner of an alcove

To glimpse the tip of its pink tail

His feverish eyes

Fleeing from happiness for fear that it might escape

To think that there is over the rainbow

Higher and higher, the sun above

Radiant

To believe in heaven, to believe in gods

Even when everything seems hateful to us

That our heart is set ablaze and burned

Fleeing from happiness for fear that it might escape

Sometimes you feel like shouting "Save us!"

Who can truly know the truth of things?

Is unhappy

Fleeing from happiness for fear that it might escape

To think that there is over the rainbow

Higher and higher, the sun above

Radiant

To believe in heaven, to believe in gods

Even when everything seems hateful to us

That our heart is set ablaze and burned

Fleeing from happiness for fear that it might escape

Tell me you still love me, if you dare.

I would like you to find something else

Better

Fleeing from happiness for fear that it might escape

To think that there is over the rainbow

Higher and higher, the sun above

Radiant
