The play Pasteur was written for his father Lucien and premiered by the latter on January 23, 1919 at the Vaudeville Theatre.

In 1935, Guitry adapted his play for the cinema as a tribute to his father (who had died ten years earlier) and out of a cult of national greatness, here embodied by the illustrious scientist.
