Richard Wagner (1813.1883).
Autographed letter signed to CF Meser.
Half a page on a bifolio sheet, in German.
Bayreuth. June 14, 1872.
A fine letter from the German composer, newly settled in Bayreuth, checking his musical contracts with the Meser company.
"To C.F. Meser, music dealer at the court of Dresden. Please allow the bearer of this letter to examine the contracts I had concluded with the deceased owner of your house, and provide him with a copy. Richard Wagner."
In 1871, Wagner chose the small town of Bayreuth as the site for his new opera house. On May 22, 1872 (a few days before this letter), construction of the Festspielhaus ("Festival Hall") was inaugurated to the music of the Huldigungsmarsch. Among those in attendance were Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Ritter, Heinrich Porges, and Peter Cornelius.
