"Writing and painting seem to me worth considering insofar as they manifest an unfamiliar feeling for poetry."
Magritte defines what he considers to be mystery in art.
“Dear Madam, Thank you for your message. I regret that the painting you had isn’t reproduced in color ; perhaps that will happen someday? Regarding your friend’s collages, I probably lack the imagination to find figures in them—which, moreover, are hardly surprising. If there is mystery, it is necessarily unknowable—or else it’s an open mystery. For my part, I never look for any intentions in a work other than those of its author. Writing and painting seem to me worth considering insofar as they manifest an unfamiliar feeling for poetry. They manifest it by evoking the unknowable mystery of familiar things. ”
