"Dear Sir, I believe I told you that Grasset asked me to change the title of my novel. I intend to call it Emmanuel or The Green Heart . Time is passing, and I would be most grateful if you could tell me around what date you plan to publish it, as my return depends on that date. Please forgive me, sir, for once again taking advantage of your kindness, and accept my devoted sentiments. Raymond Radiguet. P.S. I gave his manuscript to Cocteau. I don't think there's any urgency in sending it back to you and then giving it to Grasset upon my return."

The Devil in the Flesh was published by Grasset in March 1923, a few months before the death of its author.

Radiguet had considered more than a dozen titles for this first novel, noted on a school notebook: Head First, Head and Heart, Head Line and Heart Line, The Education of the Heart, The Arid Heart, Dry Eyes, etc.

Until the end of 1922, it was "Emmanuel or the green heart" that seemed to be definitively retained, as evidenced by his correspondence.
