In her 1971 work, Surrealism and Sexuality , Xavière Gauthier, in the margins of the reproduction of the photomontage, expresses the following viewpoint regarding Molinier's mythical photograph: " If Surrealism was anything, it was certainly in the perversions promoted by its painters and some of its writers. The point of impact of Surrealism, its truth, is located exactly below the center of Pierre Molinier's photomontage, On the Shield. It is located between the widely spread buttocks of a woman whose legs, encased in long black stockings, are repeated and multiplied."
