Formerly owned by the writer Jean Dolent, the famous portrait of Verlaine painted by Eugène Carrière in 1890 was acquired in 1910 by the French State with the financial support of the Society of Friends of Luxembourg. The work, which was kept at the Musée du Luxembourg until 1933, is now on display at the Musée d'Orsay.

Robert Vallin was born in Le Havre. A somewhat disillusioned school experience led him to enlist in the army, and upon his return in September 1889, he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Le Havre. He completed his training in Brussels around 1894, before returning to Paris where he briefly pursued a career as a writer, encouraged by Jean Moréas and Charles Morice, close friends of Paul Verlaine.
