A very rare photograph of Verlaine, in profile, the Socratic figure, for his application to the French Academy.

Verlaine sought Hippolyte Taine's academic seat by an official letter on August 4, 1893. Ridiculed by some of his peers, he sought, in order to restore his image, the Swedish-born photographer Otto Wegener, known as Otto (1849-1922), who devoted a session of six poses to him, in various postures.

Verlaine did not convince, and Albert Sorel was elected to the seat no. 25 coveted by the poet.
