The poet is waiting to be paid for the publication of one of his stories written during a stay at Broussais Hospital.

“My dear Vanier, I assure you that the story in question did not come from [Albert] Savine, as I had it submitted to Le Figaro , which returned it to me without publishing it, no doubt because of the title, which I changed in the copy you have. I gave it to you at Broussais without asking for money because I did not yet have the manuscript in ink at that time at Le Figaro, which published a story of mine written for the same Broussais at the same time (1893), L'Obsesseur. Therefore, I expect a little money from you in good faith. Yours, P. Verlaine.”
