On May 8, 1880, Gustave Flaubert died suddenly at his home in Croisset, struck by a sudden stroke.
His burial at the monumental cemetery of Rouen took place on May 11, 1880, in the presence of many writers who recognized him as their master.
Emile Zola wrote a long text in Le Figaro, the opening lines of which are as follows: " The death of Gustave Flaubert was a thunderbolt for all of us!"
