A beautiful letter from Montherlant, during the Second World War, cynically evoking his military career.

“Do I need to tell you that I don’t see myself quite the way you see me? (…) Besides, imagine, I don’t want to talk about myself! There’s a precious respite here, which we’d be crazy not to take advantage of.”

Henry de Montherlant (1895-1972)

Autographed letter signed to Maurice Betz , journalist at Paris Midi .

Two quarto pages, dated November 29, 1941. Autograph envelope.

A beautiful letter from Montherlant, during the Second World War, cynically evoking his military career.

“Dear Sir, thank you for your article in Paris Midi . Need I tell you that I don't quite see myself as you do? But I certainly won't bore you with my reasons, none of which would hold your interest. Besides, imagine, I don't want to talk about myself! There's a precious respite here, which one would be foolish not to take advantage of. But you're right to think that it would have been difficult for me to be a career soldier, something I seriously considered at least once. I spent several years in contact with the officers of the Army of Africa, and I found then that intellectuals have their merits!
Believe me, dear Sir, in my devoted sentiments. Montherlant”
