Margaret Thatcher (1925.2013)

Signed letter (with handwritten notes) to Mrs. Judy Adams.

House of Commons letterhead . March 2, 1977.

A fine letter from the Iron Lady, still at the head of the Tory Party, regarding an abortion law that caused great debate in England.

“Dear Mrs Adams, Thank you for your letter; I am grateful to you for writing and for putting your view so clearly. Unfortunately, due to long-standing engagements in Finchley I was unable to be in the house of commons when the Abortion (Amendment) bill came up last Friday . But as you will doubtless know, it received a second reading, and will now go to Committee Stage. »

“Dear Mrs. Adams, Thank you for your letter; I am grateful that you wrote to me and made your views so clear. Unfortunately, due to prior commitments in Finchley, I was unable to be present in the House of Commons when the abortion bill was introduced last Friday. But as you are probably aware, a second reading has been requested and the bill will now be debated in committee.”

The Abortion Bill, introduced by William Benyon in 1977, aimed to reduce the legal abortion time limit. The bill was ultimately rejected.

Two years later, Margaret Thatcher led the Conservatives to victory and, on May 4, 1979, became the first woman to lead the government of a European country.
