"I have revised my will and agree to leave my bones in Paris . I will be buried with my other half, blessed by this perpetual embrace."

A beautiful letter from Jouhandeau evoking his fluctuating love affair with Elise and consenting to be buried with her.

“Dear Maurice, I’ve just made a new recruit: one of my former students from 9th grade is getting back in touch with me… you see that despite my upcoming 80th birthday, I haven’t lost my touch . Since your visit, my wife has been speaking fondly of you and your wife. Honeymoon: I’ve rewritten my will and agree to leave my bones in Paris . I’ll be buried with my other half, blissfully happy with this perpetual embrace. My mother wouldn’t have approved of this posthumous divorce, and I must say I sensed its impropriety. It’s true that I had nothing to do with it. My doubts will lead us even beyond the grave. I’m not referring to ‘those gentlemen.’ Your old Master.”
