“Dear friends, In August of this year, you purchased ‘The Silver Shirt,’ a painting exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, which you lent me for that exhibition. You paid three hundred francs , and you are now asking for it back. This is in case someone comes to your home to inquire about the veracity of my statements. You are aware that there is an objection to these paintings from the Salon d’Automne , and there has been a referral for this reason. Yours sincerely, Van Dongen.”
