"Dear friend, Here is a check for 20,000 francs. I don't know where we stand with our accounts – and here are the boots too. I love them! Even unfinished, they look good indoors. Could I have them by the end of the week? Thank you in advance. Yours sincerely, Karl Lagerfeld."

Shoemaker Raymond Massaro (1929-2019), a virtuoso of bespoke footwear, was the official supplier to the most prestigious French haute couture houses: Chanel, Madame Grès, Thierry Mugler, Azzedine Alaïa, Christian Lacroix, etc. He was president of the National Union of Shoemakers and vice-president of the National Leather Council.

In 1957, at Gabrielle Chanel's request, Massaro created the iconic two-tone pump with an elastic strap, a timeless classic and flagship of the house. Since then, transparent plastic pumps, jeweled sandals, cork platforms, gaiter boots, pearl heels, boots, and more have emerged from the collaboration between the shoemaker and Karl Lagerfeld.

In 2002, Chanel acquired the Massaro company in order to protect the French know-how of this luxury craft, at the service of its collections.
