Shoemaker Raymond Massaro (1929-2019), a virtuoso of bespoke footwear, was the official supplier to the most prestigious French haute couture houses: Chanel, Madame Grès, Thierry Mugler, Azzedine Alaïa, Christian Lacroix, and others. He was president of the National Union of Shoemakers and vice-president of the National Leather Council. In 1957, at the request of Gabrielle Chanel, Massaro created the iconic two-tone pump with an elastic strap, a timeless classic and a hallmark of the house. Since then, transparent plastic pumps, jeweled sandals, cork platforms, gaiter boots, beaded heels, boots, and more have emerged from the collaboration between the shoemaker and Karl Lagerfeld. In 2002, Chanel acquired the Massaro company to safeguard the French expertise of this luxury craftsmanship, which serves its collections.
