"I've just returned, my dearest, from the Berrus's, where I went hoping to dispel a terrible headache that was preventing me even from reading. I'm back more or less in the same place I was when I left. But I've done my duty; that's all I can do , the rest is none of my business, as poor Kesler used to say. I met Mesdames Charles [Hugo] and Asseline at the ladies' house. However, they didn't tell me they weren't dining here tonight, which means I have to cancel their reservations immediately."

Ah! There you are… Well, that won't stop me from continuing my scribbling as if nothing were amiss. I'll write to young Henriette later. I'll even add a kind word for Madame Chenay, despite her inattention to me in everything she writes to you, but it doesn't matter right now. Like Marquand, if she's being kind to you at this moment, I feel indebted to her. I adore you .
