Autograph letter to Victor Hugo.

Accompanied by a relic of Hugo addressed to his lover in an envelope written in his own hand.

Four pages in-16°. Paris. Tuesday, December 16, 1879.

A beautiful letter from Drouet, sad and suffering from his stomach cancer. She mentions and thanks Hugo for the relic he gave her.

We are including this relic of Hugo: a tuft of the great man's beard presented in an envelope written in his own hand " for JJ "

“My stomach is protesting, my busy little thing, both at lunch and dinner, because if one is too late, the other, in turn, is too early. I'm not counting the other disruptions these (…) produce, fortunately without my poor little household (…) Besides, what I'm telling you is only to keep me from saying things that are more important to my heart than to my stomach. It's not dirty and it takes up space; that's all it takes to fill my restitus. Henriette has already returned from the excellent Meurice. They are better and send their regards to you both, as well as to me. Another guitar—the doorwoman asks to speak to you on behalf of the owner; I told her that she would be notified when you have time to hear from her. Speaking of the weather, today's is almost as gloomy and boring as I am, which is saying something.” That doesn't stop me from being deeply touched by your lovely gift earlier and thanking you from the bottom of my heart. It will take its place in my collection of relics as soon as I have it brought back whole from Guernsey. Until then, I'm keeping it safe, wanting to always carry it close to my heart.

Provenance: Juliette Drouet, then Louis Koch by descent.
