"Dearest friends, I am so happy to receive your note, thank you. I have just arrived from the USA where I had a real triumph (at my age). I sent a telegram to Claude and your sister. I hope you are well; here the children are doing very well, thank heavens. Lots of love from your faithful Josephine."

During the 1960s, Josephine Baker campaigned against the apartheid policies in South Africa and returned to the United States to support Martin Luther King's movement. On August 28, 1963, dressed in her French army uniform, she stood alongside King when he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
