Oedipus' mother, Jocasta, had married him without knowing the ties that bound them and took her own life when she learned of it.

Provenance: Jean-Jacques Kihm. Jean-Jacques Kihm (1923-1970) met Cocteau in 1953 after sending him his poems. A collaboration, then a ten-year friendship, developed. Kihm, also a playwright, published Cocteau's works as well as an essay, and programmed his plays at the Troyes Festival and on the radio.
