“Dear Mother, Thank you for your birthday wishes. We’ve had dreadful weather here, as everywhere else, except for the past week, and now it’s getting worse again. It’s been a very unpleasant season. We did manage to get out on the boat a little, but not much. Still, we’re resting and not unhappy. Hélène [the eldest daughter of the Joliot-Curie couple, born in 1927] is swimming very well this year, even though it’s not warm: she goes into the water very bravely and does all sorts of somersaults. She seems to be doing very well this year. I send you my warmest regards and I hope that Marguerite [Frédéric Joliot-Curie’s sister] will be able to do some painting despite the bad weather. Irène.”
