"Hans has already painted a few canvases and is mentally preparing others."

A very beautiful, summery letter from the French artist Roberta González, wife of Hans Hartung between 1932 and 1952, describing to her friends the joys of her summer divided between rest and artistic work.

"Dear friends, We were so glad to receive your note. For several days now we've been enjoying a great rest in the open fields [?] : wheat, beets, alfalfa, [?], etc., as far as the eye can see – We sleep at night and doze during the day – But, if it happens to rain, hop! into our little studio – For his part, Hans has already painted a few canvases and is preparing others in his mind – As for me, trapped in a profound laziness, I let time do its work for me! Sometimes, between naps, I devour 'The Rage to Live' by Mezzrow. Are you familiar with it?"

"For amateur photography, it's very difficult! But there's a local amateur photographer who takes snapshots. Enclosed is a proof of his work! I'm delighted that your piece about my father is ready to be published . I told you about a self-portrait he engraved, but I've been trying to find it for the past few months; I can't seem to locate it. I know I carefully put it away, but where? So, I'm sorry. I remembered today that there's a photograph of the proof. I'll write to my mother-in-law and ask her to send it to me, and as soon as I receive it, I'll forward it to you. Otherwise, I'll make a little drawing . In any case, I plan to send you something towards the end of the week. Did you have a lovely time in Italy? You did go, didn't you, or am I dreaming? We'll let you know as soon as we get back. Best wishes to you both. Roberta & Hans."
