"Madam, The volumes on Japan are not ready , and I understand that you will only receive tomorrow the one I dedicated to you yesterday. I am therefore sending you another Fort CLM immediately . I dedicate it to your mother. Would you like to read it while waiting for yours, or yours, if you would like a copy of Japan? I kiss your hands. Maupassant."

Strong as Death , Maupassant's fifth novel, was published in 1889 by Ollendorff. Its title is taken from the Song of Songs: " Love is strong as death, and jealousy is hard as the grave. "

The Duchess of Regina thus received Fort as if death were the first. If the Countess had received two copies of this book, one in Japan (no doubt with her name printed on it), and the other with the gift that Maupassant had just sent, to our knowledge neither has appeared on the market since.
