God is a cigar smoker
I see its grey clouds
I know he even smokes at night
Like me, my darling
You're just a Gitanes smoker
I see your blue swirls
It sometimes brings tears to my eyes
You are my master after God
God is a cigar smoker
He told me himself
May the smoke send us to paradise
I know, my darling
You're just a Gitanes smoker
Without them you are unhappy
Open your eyes in the moonlight
For the love of God
God is a cigar smoker
Very close to you, far from him
I would like to keep you all my life
Understand me, my darling
You're just a Gitanes smoker
And the last one I want
Seeing her shine in the depths of my eyes
Love me, in God's name
OK

The song "Dieu est un fumeur de havanes" was written in 1980 for the soundtrack of Claude Berri's film, " Je vous aime" , in which Serge Gainsbourg played one of the main roles alongside Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Alain Souchon and Jean-Louis Trintignant.
This duet, which achieved great commercial success and remains one of the artist's most popular songs, prompted Serge Gainsbourg to compose an album for Catherine Deneuve immediately after filming wrapped. Souviens-toi de m'oublier was released in 1981.
