Signed letter to Jean Leymarie

Rome. January 15, 1991.

“Dear Jean, what a pleasure your letter was! What a pity we didn't meet when you were in Rome and I was in Venice. And I wasn't even able to see Balthus, but we spoke on the telephone a few days ago, and from the sound of his voice, I had the impression that he is more lively, more vital. But is it so difficult to meet, dear friend? I have been putting off for months a trip to Paris that seemed so necessary, urgent, inevitable. But, obviously, it wasn't, for I am still taking the liberty of changing the date. The only real reason that would give this trip a true commitment would be to tell myself that I absolutely must go to Paris to see my friend Jean. And so I will do. But if you were to come to Rome before then, please tell me as soon as possible; Apart from my home number (6780850), I'll give you the number of a small studio where I happily spend hours doing nothing: 8442676. In any case, there's Fiametta, also with a number: 3224602. You ask me what I'll do after "The Moon"? I'd love to know that too! But for the moment, there's a great silence all around, little enthusiasm, and a stagnation without remorse or embarrassment. The only amusing thing is that I'm always followed by three or four Japanese people: they smile at me, greet me graciously, and promise me everything. I'll give you news, dear Jean, but I'd rather tell you about the beginning of this new adventure. For now, I send you my love with the sentiments of true friendship. Giuletta also sends you her best wishes. See you soon, Happy New Year, good work, and a life full of serenity and creativity, Your Federico.
