Eugène DELACROIX (1798.1863)

Autographed letter signed to the art critic Jules-Joseph Arnoux.

One and a half pages in octavo. February 3 (no place or date)

Frayed edges and a tiny marginal tear.

"All that remains for me is to hope that the public sees me with the same eyes as you."

A very fine letter from Delacroix, enthusiastic about Arnoux's criticisms of his work.

“Your most gracious article has given me all the pleasure you can imagine. You speak to me in ways that seem far beyond the ordinary, and you certainly make me love my work infinitely more than I could ever have imagined. You have also perfectly explained and understood what I wished to express . I owe you compliments in turn. Your article seems to me very well thought out and very well written, both as a piece of study and in a style appropriate for judging a work of art. You are too kind to have devoted so much space to this examination. It only remains for me to hope that the public sees me with the same eyes as you. Please accept, my dear Arnoux, with thanks, the expression of my most sincere devotion. Eug. Delacroix.”
