Upon returning from exile, Zola advised a sculptor wishing to create his bust, in the midst of the Dreyfus affair.

“Dear Sir, It is very difficult for me to give you an opinion. I fear that the waves around a bust might be misinterpreted. Furthermore, the head resting on a closed fist will require a great deal of development of the torso. But all of this depends on the execution, and I believe we can do no better than to rely on your extensive experience and your own taste. Sincerely, Emile Zola.”
