"Mr. Vice-President, My duties have unfortunately prevented me from fulfilling the functions of President of the Society of Good Letters with the diligence I would have wished. If any members of the Society would still be so kind as to consider me this year for re-election to the Presidency, I would ask them, Mr. Vice-President, to consider casting their votes for another candidate , and I ask you to express my sincere gratitude for the votes they have already so kindly bestowed upon me. I have the honor to remain, with the most distinguished consideration, Mr. Vice-President, your most humble and obliging servant. Chateaubriand."
