"It is quite certain that I do not regret the power..."

A beautiful letter from Chateaubriand defending himself against any feeling of superiority due to his ministerial functions and thanking his correspondent for his zealous support of the Marie-Thérèse institution founded in 1819 by his wife Céleste de Chateaubriand.

“You judge me, Sir, both too highly and too harshly. It is quite certain that I do not regret the loss of power, but it is also certain that it is not through a feeling of superiority that I fail to recognize myself. Please keep me, Sir, in your memories and in your prayers. The infirmary of Marie-Thérèse [the institution founded by Céleste de Chateaubriand] cannot forget what it owes to your talents and your zeal. Please accept, Sir, my renewed thanks and the assurance of my highest consideration. Chateaubriand.”
