"My dear Hellens, I received your manuscript, read it, and took it to Grasset . I don't know when Daniel Halévy will read it, because Brun, based on what I told him, seemed very eager to read it and took it with him. Besides, I don't think you'll be able to know for sure by the 15th: the various readers are on vacation until the 11th. Anyway, we'll see, and I'll keep you informed."

I greatly enjoyed the style of *Love Rivalries*, often very insightful and always extremely pure. As soon as I see DH, I will speak to him about this novel. It's quite possible he'll be interested, despite its considerable length (obviously greater than that of *The Green Notebooks*). We'll also discuss this in a few days, if you can still come to Paris on the 15th, and we can finally talk in detail about your book. See you soon, then, and very cordially yours. Malraux

Hellens published La femme partagée , with Grasset, in the autumn of 1929.
