“‘From Guéret, where I will be on Wednesday,’ you tell me. Your letter is undated, and I tore open the envelope. I don’t know if Wednesday has passed… I would like my affection to precede you to Guéret and welcome you . Why this sadness? Has something hurt you? Or is it just a sadness ‘without reason,’ like Verlaine’s? Can my friendship soothe it? You promise me a ‘long, long letter’—you sense, don’t you, that I am waiting for it with all my heart. I am extremely tired and will be leaving Paris in a few days to try to get some sleep in the south. My mail will be forwarded by the NRF. I cannot give you my address, as I don’t yet know exactly where I will be going. Yours, André Gide.”
