André Gide, old and ill, gives some news to his friend.

“Dear Renée,  ‘Disapproval’? Certainly not. But I was, and still am, too tired to write. And it would have required such a long letter, with endless ‘considerations’ (but none of them pleasant). ‘Prometheus’? I believe that’s already been covered on the radio. What about your Leonardo?”

No, no, I'm not feeling wonderful at all , and this very morning I had to call the doctor in Vence (who, incidentally, reassured me: it was just a false sore throat). My heart is faltering, but I still allow you to kiss me. André Gide.

Gide died less than five months after this letter, on February 19, 1951 in his Parisian apartment on rue Vaneau, at the age of 81.
