Rare autograph manuscript of Jarry constituting the chapter "The Battle of Morsang", central and founder of the novel La Dragonne .
From the unfinished novel The Dragonne , the posthumous publication of which is based on a complex set of manuscripts, only the chapter "The Battle of Morsang" appeared during the lifetime of Alfred Jarry, in the White Revue of March-April 1903.
His editorial staff was finished shortly before, Jarry announcing to Félix Fénéon on February 28 that he had ready "the news being borrowed from the novel", before sending him the complete manuscript. We know that the manuscript presents 3 bunk phases, the first to the lead mine, the 2 ° correcting the first, in red ink, followed by final corrections in black ink.
The present fragment features Erbrand Sacqueville shortly before her meeting with the heroine Jeanne Sabrenas, on the battlefield.
The Battle of Morsang, a central episode around which the whole novel revolves, is located on a road "in horseshoe", with a troop following a circular movement around Sacqueville. The latter is armed not from a sword but of a cane made of a vine of vines, taking the appearance of an umbrella handle then a cirque marquee mast.
