______________________________________

You must, madame, be sure that you will be recognized for writing an anonymous letter to a romantic during the masked ball season. It is nonetheless true that I thank you for it and I hardly deserve it, given my nature as a poorly brought up man who lets one New Year's Day pass without saying anything. I am currently barricaded in my room, grumpy, stupid and annoyed, very much abhorring everything that is part of this sex that we have nicknamed beautiful . This is why I won't go see a pretty woman for anything in the world, not even on the pretext that she is as friendly and witty as an ugly one. If you ever find yourself with a very cold, very sullen, with a very ugly hat pulled over your eyes, let me know, I beg you; I will immediately go and pay court to you, with all the clumsiness of which I am capable. Your respectful servant Alf. by Musset. »
