Reader, adorable executioner,
Don't be afraid to be strict
For us who write these verses
Barely worthy of a ZERO.
RR.
This quatrain appeared in his collection " Holiday Homework " published by Éditions de la Sirène in 1921, under the title Zero and bearing slight modifications: " Dear readers, adorable executioner / More than ever be severe / When you discover these verses / Hardly worthy of a zero ."

On the back of this quatrain, Radiguet wrote this seventeen-line poem, which remained unpublished during his lifetime. Written in a disproportionate, erratic hand, it was probably composed under the influence of alcohol (as indicated by the final note: "I am alone , drunk") and reveals all the early disenchantment of the young poet:
Because the Earth is round
I won't go to the ends of the earth
Because she doesn't want me
I will not fulfill my dream
It is 5 o'clock
I watch the trams go by
There are no more trams in Paris
Oh well, I like trams
It is 5 o'clock
The working class goes to work
I am by the water's edge
I make paper fortune tellers
And I'm leaving... with
Perhaps today the Earth will no longer be round
And I could go to the ends of the earth
Maybe today she'll want me
And I could fulfill my dream.
Radiguet. To Machin. I am alone and drunk.
