"Rheumatism, the desolation of observing the whole procession , and 77 years old!"

A very moving letter from Verne, one of the last of his life, written in trembling handwriting, to his old traveling companion.

"My dear Robert, Thank you very much for your postcards and my compliments on your superb palace. But you are addressing your invitation to your old friend, who, after spending four months in his room last winter, is threatened with spending six this time. Rheumatism, the desolation of observing the entire entourage, and 77 years of age! My wife and I send our best wishes to the Prefect, for her family, and, once again, I say to myself, my dear Robert, your old traveling companion. Jules Verne."

Suffering from diabetes for several years, Jules Verne had lost his visual acuity to the point where he could barely write. On March 16, 1905, he was struck down in Amiens by a violent attack and forced to take to his bed. He never recovered from this stroke. The last days of his life were a slow agony leading to death, which struck on March 24 of that same year.
